SAEDNEWS: United Nations Secretary-General on Tuesday called on Iran and Western countries to intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent the so-called snapback of international sanctions on Tehran initiated by E3 last month.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized on Tuesday the critical importance of building trust through dialogue, responding to a question from a reporter at the United Nations.
“My appeal to Iran and to the other powers is to use diplomacy and to create the conditions of trust in order to be able to avoid it,” Guterres stated, underlining the role of negotiations in averting escalation.
Guterres confirmed that he has been in contact with both sides, aiming to facilitate discussions and provide his good offices. “Of course, offering my good offices, but it all depends on the diplomatic efforts that are made in order to establish the trust that is needed for the snapback to be avoided,” he said.
The comments come after France, Germany, and the United Kingdom triggered the UN snapback sanctions mechanism last month, linked to the partially expired 2015 Iran nuclear deal. This move started a 30-day diplomatic window, with sanctions scheduled to take effect on October 18 if no agreement is reached.
