Iran Defends Nuclear Program at UN in Vienna: ‘Peaceful Intentions, Global Responsibility

At the conclusion of his trip to Vienna and after delivering a speech at the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohammad Eslami, Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI), described the visit as constructive, emphasizing that “positive steps were taken.”

Eslami noted the importance of Iran’s presence amid intense psychological, media, and political campaigns and the pressure exerted by American and Zionist movements. He stressed that being on the ground allowed Iran to present the facts clearly, highlight the damage inflicted on international law and the sanctions system, and defend the integrity of the IAEA.

“Our presence ensured the stage was not left vacant,” Eslami said. “The one-sided narrative, which seeks to portray Iran as lacking transparency and straying from its nuclear commitments, did not go unanswered.”

He further underscored the need for a new procedural framework within the safeguards system, noting that no such mechanism currently exists. Specifically, Eslami called for clarity on how the inspection regime should function when a country’s nuclear facilities are targeted by military attacks.

This visit, he concluded, represents Iran’s proactive engagement on the global stage, defending its nuclear program while promoting transparency and international legal norms.
