SAEDNEWS: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed full European support for Moldova on Aug. 27, condemning what he called sustained Russian “hybrid attacks” and reaffirming backing for Chisinau’s EU path.
According to SaedNews, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Chisinau on Aug. 27 to deliver a blunt warning to Moscow and a pledge of European solidarity to Moldova on the eve of a pivotal parliamentary vote.
Merz said “not a day passes without massive hybrid attacks from Russia,” framing the campaign as an attempt to undermine Moldova’s democratic trajectory and pull the country back into Russia’s sphere of influence. He accused President Vladimir Putin of harboring imperial ambitions tied to a refusal to accept the Soviet collapse.
Standing with Moldova’s pro-European leadership, the visiting heads of state pledged technical and political support for Chisinau’s reform agenda and its EU accession bid, with Merz stressing that “the door to the EU is open.” The visit combined symbolism — marking Moldova’s 34th Independence Day — with concrete offers of assistance in areas from energy to information security.
Merz also warned that peace must not come at the price of Ukrainian capitulation, arguing that concessions now would only buy Russia time to prepare further aggression. European leaders said they would continue to back diplomatic efforts while resisting external pressure that threatens Moldova’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.
