Baghdad: Iraq Acts Independently Amid U.S. Objections to Iran Agreement

The Iraqi Embassy in Washington has responded to U.S. State Department spokesperson criticism regarding Iraq’s signing of a security memorandum with Iran, stressing that Iraq does not follow the policy of any other country.

According to Saed News citing Shafaq News, the official Iraqi news agency (WAFA) reported early Wednesday that the Iraqi Embassy in Washington issued a statement defending the signing of the security memorandum with Iran, aimed at preserving security and controlling the shared border between the two countries, while addressing recent remarks by Tommy Brusse, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department.

In its statement, the Iraqi Embassy said: “In response to the statements of the U.S. State Department spokesperson at his recent press conference, we emphasize that Iraq is a fully sovereign country and has the right to conclude agreements and memoranda in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and national laws, and consistent with its highest national interests.”

The embassy further noted that Iraq maintains friendly and cooperative relations with numerous countries around the world, including its geographic neighbors, the United States, and other friendly nations, and is committed to building these relationships based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Concluding the statement, the embassy affirmed: “Iraq is not subject to the policy of any country, and its decisions are based on its independent national will. In this context, the recently signed security memorandum with the Iranian side was carried out within the framework of bilateral cooperation to maintain security and control the shared border, in order to achieve stability and security for both countries and serve the security of the entire region.”

It is noteworthy that Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, recently signed the security memorandum with Qasim Al-Araji, Iraq’s National Security Advisor, during Larijani’s visit to Baghdad, focusing on security coordination along the shared borders of the two countries.
