SAEDNEWS: Larijani said the agreement represents a model of security cooperation that could be extended to other countries in the region.
Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, says the core objective of the security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad is to ensure stability in bilateral relations and prevent any individual or country from undermining security in either nation.
Speaking at a press conference in Baghdad on Monday, Larijani said the agreement represents a model of security cooperation that could be extended to other countries in the region.
“Our view is that all regional states should be secure and strong,” he said, according to Iraq’s Al Ekhbariya TV.
The top Iranian security official stressed that the deal aims to safeguard mutual security by fostering closer coordination between Iran and Iraq.
Larijani arrived in Baghdad on Monday as part of a regional tour that will also take him to Lebanon. During his Baghdad visit, a security agreement was signed to enhance coordination along Iraq-Iran shared border.
Addressing regional political dynamics, Larijani said Hezbollah and other resistance movements possess a high level of political maturity and require no guardianship.
“They know well what is in the best interest of their countries and do not need a custodian,” he said. He added that Iran is not a country that would be shaken by “the winds that some think could destabilize it.”
His comments about Lebanon and its resistance movement, Hezbollah, come amid US-pushed calls for the disarmament of the group.
