SAEDNEWS: Renowned British actress Emma Thompson has revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump invited her on a date the very day she divorced.
According to the political service of the analytical news website SaedNews, quoting Fars News Agency, Thompson humorously said that if she had accepted Trump’s dinner invitation, she might have changed the course of American history.
The 66-year-old actress, while receiving an award honoring her professional achievements at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, revealed that the U.S. President invited her to dinner on the very day her divorce from Kenneth Branagh, the British actor and filmmaker, was finalized.
Thompson said that during the filming of the movie “Primary Colors” in 1998, her phone rang and a voice on the other end said, “Hello, this is Donald Trump.”
She added that at first she thought it was a joke. “I thought it was a joke and said, ‘How can I help you?’ Then Trump said: ‘I would like you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we can have dinner together.’”
The actress known for works like “Henry V,” “Dead Again,” and “In the Name of the Father,” said at the Swiss festival that she thanked Trump and told him, “I’ll let you know.”
According to The Telegraph, Thompson interpreted that Trump—who at that time was divorced from his second wife Marla Maples, an American actress—had assigned his staff to find a “suitable” person for a date.
“On that day, my divorce decree had been issued. I bet he has people looking for the right person to go out with him. A good divorced woman was what he was after. And they found my number on the filming set. This is [an] operation of stalking and monitoring.”
Thompson also added that sometimes she wonders what would have happened if she had accepted that invitation. Maybe, “I could have changed the course of American history.”
Thompson is now married to British actor Greg Wise, and they have two children. Trump later married Melania, a former Slovenian-American model.
This was not the first time for Donald Trump. Besides Thompson, Salma Hayek, the famous actress of “Once Upon a Time in Mexico,” has previously recounted that Trump once invited her on a date despite her being engaged at the time.
Hayek, who was less known then, declined the invitation, and afterward, details about her personal life were published in the tabloid National Enquirer—which was under Trump’s influence.
Hayek said: When I told him even if I weren’t engaged, I wouldn’t go out with him, he considered it disrespectful and informed the National Enquirer. And you know whatever he wants gets published. They wrote that Trump refuses to go out with me because I am short.
Trump’s legal troubles regarding sexual relations and his offensive remarks about women are a heavy dossier that has drawn increased attention since he became president; especially in cases related to his relationship with Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress, and writer Jane Carroll, which led to a significant financial settlement.
The Carroll case is considered the first major blow to Trump’s perceived immunity from punishment. However, his image as a victor and his misogynistic attitudes remain intact.
His personal life has been full of turmoil, with one of the most controversial aspects being his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the American pedophile and sex offender, which has caused Trump to face scrutiny even among his supporters. He had promised during his 2024 election campaigns to release the names of investors and celebrities involved in the Epstein case, but after returning to the White House, he backed down, and his administration announced that no such list exists.
Despite denials and a strategy of denial and attack that the U.S. president has pursued regarding his past relationships, these behaviors continue to haunt his reputation.
