SAEDNEWS: Seventeen coins from Mary I and Elizabeth I, including groats and sixpences, were discovered by Sam Egerton and friends and officially declared a treasure.
According to the History and Culture section of Saed News, citing FaraDID, Sam Egerton from Utaxter made this discovery in January 2023, a year after taking up treasure hunting as a new hobby. The coins will be appraised, and several museums and art galleries are interested in acquiring them for their collections.
At the time, the entire hoard was worth just five shillings—equivalent to four days’ wages for a skilled merchant in 1590. Today, that would amount to £41.48 (roughly 3 million Iranian tomans).
The museum will need to raise funds to purchase the coins for public display, while the finder and the landowner will receive a reward for the discovery. Mr. Egerton said, “This is a magnificent hobby—both fascinating and educational. I’ve learned so much about history that I never would have discovered if I hadn’t taken up metal detecting.”
