SAEDNEWS: The decisions by several European countries, including France and Britain, to recognize Palestine are not driven by a genuine shift in foreign policy, but rather by fears of mounting public anger and potential civil unrest, a Bosnian political analyst has said.
According to Saednews, In an exclusive interview in Moscow on Tuesday, Emina Sahinovic warned that such gestures also serve as a cover for Europe’s complicity in Israel’s ongoing crimes in Gaza.
The full text of the interview follows:
What is your view on the increasing number of European countries that intend to recognize Palestine?
The fact that some European countries are considering recognizing Palestine stems from a fear of public unrest, especially given that Israel has completely lost the PR and media war, despite holding significant control over mainstream media. For example, France would not want a repeat of its experience with the Yellow Vests. Secondly, this move also serves as a distraction from their own role and complicity in what is arguably the first live-streamed, digital genocide.
Considering the historical experiences and Europe following American policies, can the actions of European countries be assessed as an independent action in the direction of establishing peace?
I don’t think so. European countries are simply trying to buy peace and salvage what’s left of the so-called “international community,” “international law,” and the myth of international institutions. I call it a myth because all of the above have consistently been used to serve Western interests, or at least what they perceive to be their interests.
As Professors Walt and Mearsheimer argue in their book The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, supporting Israel has never truly aligned with Western interests; rather, due to various forms of indirect pressure, they were compelled to act as they did.
US President Donald Trump did not announce a strict and severe position in response to the position of French President Emmanuel Macron on the recognition of Palestine. Does this indicate that Macron's position was taken following a secret and behind-the-scenes decision between Paris, Washington, and Tel Aviv?
A. As I mentioned before, the United States may also attempt to salvage some credibility for “international law,” considering no one truly knows what kind of global order we are heading toward, especially now that trust in international institutions, law, and organizations has been severely damaged.
In what way will the decision of European countries to recognize Palestine benefit the people of Palestine?
I don’t believe this will benefit the Palestinian people in any truly impactful way. At most, it might increase pressure on Israel to slow down or temporarily halt the genocide. But so far, we haven’t seen Israel respond to any form of pressure - except military resistance, as demonstrated during the 12-day war.
