SAEDNEWS: In a rare and urgent move, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for an emergency meeting of the Board of Governors to address the United States' unprecedented military assault on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
According to Saed News, Rafael Grossi, head of the IAEA, announced that an emergency session of the agency’s Board of Governors will convene on Monday to assess the ramifications of Washington’s military strike on three of Iran’s most critical nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
This development follows a dramatic escalation in regional tensions, after President Donald Trump declared a “successful” operation aimed at crippling Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities. In response, the IAEA previously stated that no abnormal radiation levels had been recorded outside the impacted facilities.
Iran, however, has formally protested the attack. In a strongly worded letter to Grossi, Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, condemned the strikes as “flagrant violations of international law” and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Eslami urged the IAEA to end its “conspicuous inaction” and fulfill its statutory duty by openly condemning the aggression and taking appropriate international measures.
The letter underscored Iran’s contention that not only the act of attacking, but even threatening to attack peaceful nuclear facilities, is expressly prohibited under international norms.
As the IAEA prepares to deliberate on a response, global observers are watching closely to see whether the agency will uphold its legal mandate—or be drawn into the political inertia that has long overshadowed international arms control enforcement.
