SAEDNEWS: Three people were wounded, including an officer, when a gunman opened fire Friday afternoon at the headquarters of a sheriff's office in rural northwest Idaho, authorities said.
A suspect was fatally shot by law enforcement inside the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in Wallace, Idaho, following a shooting outside the building, CBS News reported.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time, Shoshone County Sheriff William Eddy said during a Friday night news conference. The suspect fired at two women sitting in a pickup truck outside the office.
“Two ladies got shot, they were sitting in a pickup,” Eddy said. “The guy shot through the windshield, striking a woman in the leg in the front seat and another in the backseat.”
The suspect then entered the sheriff’s office lobby and began firing, Eddy said. One officer was hit in the ear, though it was unclear whether he was inside the building at the time. All three victims suffered minor injuries.
“He just walked in,” Eddy said. “The lobby is always open so people can walk in and fill out reports, make contact with dispatch, or get ahold of us.”
Local and federal law enforcement, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service, responded. Officers shot and killed the suspect in the lobby area. He was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m.
Eddy said no one was taken hostage during the incident. The suspect, whose name was not released, was armed with multiple firearms. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
Wallace is about 45 miles southeast of Coeur d’Alene, near the Idaho-Washington border.
