SAEDNEWS: Following joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, former Iranian diplomat Hossein Mousavian declared that the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has proven not only ineffective but dangerous. “The only countries safe from attack,” he argued, “are those that rejected the treaty outright.”
According to Saed News, In the wake of coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian nuclear sites, former diplomat and nuclear negotiator Hossein Mousavian has launched a scathing critique of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), calling it "not only worthless but actively harmful" to its signatories.
Mousavian argued that Iran’s adherence to international nuclear commitments has only made it vulnerable, while non-signatories like Israel, India, Pakistan, and North Korea—armed with nuclear weapons—have avoided any form of military aggression from nuclear powers.
“The fact that two nuclear-armed nations attacked a non-nuclear state for complying with the very treaty designed to prevent such proliferation shows that the NPT is a geopolitical trap,” Mousavian wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In his detailed post, the veteran diplomat outlined six “hard truths” revealed by the latest escalation:
Israel’s Ten-Day Campaign Failed – According to Mousavian, Israel faced potential defeat and required US intervention to avoid collapse in its military confrontation with Iran.
NPT Has No Protective Value – This marks the first time two nuclear-armed countries have attacked a non-nuclear signatory. The event, he argues, discredits the treaty’s credibility and purpose.
UN Charter Violated – Mousavian emphasized that the US action violates the United Nations Charter, a view echoed by the UN Secretary-General, undermining America's legitimacy on the international stage.
US National Security Breakdown – Either President Trump ignored his national security team or they endorsed a reckless move, further highlighting what Mousavian described as "Netanyahu’s grip over the White House."
Global Consequences Await – The damage from the strikes extends beyond Iran. The diplomat warned that the entire region—and possibly the US itself—will face long-term strategic fallout.
A Flawed Treaty – He reiterated that only nations outside the NPT have enjoyed real sovereignty in security matters, suggesting that Iran must now reassess its obligations under the accord.
Mousavian, who spent decades advocating for a WMD-free Middle East and attempting to bridge divides between Iran and the West, concluded on a somber note: “Trump has obliterated diplomacy and made a catastrophic miscalculation.”
As Tehran weighs its options, including potential withdrawal from the NPT under Article X, Mousavian's remarks reflect a growing sentiment among Iranian policymakers: that international agreements offer little protection in a world governed by raw strategic power.
