Saed News: Following the death of Pope Francis, users' attention has turned to how his funeral ceremony will be conducted.
According to the political service of Saed News, quoting The Independent, there is a long-standing tradition in the Vatican of using exquisite Iranian carpets during important and official ceremonies. One of the most prominent examples of this tradition is the use of Iranian carpets in the funeral rites of Popes. In photos from the past fifty years, it can be seen that the coffins of deceased Popes are placed on Iranian carpets—typically woven in the Heris style.
Apart from this, other valuable Eastern rugs are also used in Vatican ceremonies, including Turkmen carpets with the traditional "Mari-gul" design, which are often reserved for the funerals of Cardinals and prominent religious figures. Additionally, in special religious rituals such as the Good Friday prayers, it has been repeatedly observed that the Pope kneels on an Iranian carpet.
With the passing of Pope Francis, it remains unclear whether this tradition will continue. Will a Heris carpet once again be spread beneath a papal coffin, or—according to his wishes—will the funeral be held in a simpler manner, without such costly details? A question that will be answered in the coming days.
