According to SaedNews, an ageing Atlantic cyclone — the remnants of Hurricane Erin — fuelled a powerful weather system that dumped heavy rain and unleashed thunderstorms across northern Italy, notably around Lake Garda and in parts of Lombardy, leaving streets and underpasses submerged and prompting local authorities to close parks and public spaces.

Regional governments issued high (red) weather alerts for the area, and Milan ordered closures of parks and green spaces as crews monitored rivers and urban drainage. Emergency services logged large numbers of calls for flooding and storm damage in Lombardy, Veneto and neighbouring provinces as rescue and clearance operations intensified.

Forecasters said the severe episode was linked to a deep trough driven by Erin’s post-tropical circulation, which pulled warm, moisture-rich air into the northern Mediterranean and created repeated rounds of heavy showers and gusty winds — a set-up that increases flash-flood and hail risk in vulnerable valleys and lakeside towns.

Local authorities urged residents and tourists to avoid flooded roads and underpasses, follow official detours, and respect evacuation advice where issued. Assessments of infrastructure damage and river-levels were ongoing as teams worked to clear drains, reopen routes and check slope stability after intense run-off.
