SAEDNEWS: President Donald Trump has revoked the Secret Service protection that President Joe Biden quietly extended for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a move effective September 1 that has drawn criticism from California officials and raised questions about her safety as she prepares for a national book tour.
According to SaedNews: President Trump on Thursday sent a memorandum to the Department of Homeland Security instructing officials to “discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law” for former Vice President Kamala D. Harris — effectively canceling an extension that Mr. Biden had quietly signed before leaving office. The directive is set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
Under federal law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office; former presidents receive lifetime protection. Harris’ six-month statutory window ended on July 21, 2025, but then-President Biden issued an undisclosed executive memorandum extending her Secret Service detail through January 2026 — an order Mr. Trump has now revoked.
The revocation removes the federal protective detail that had provided intelligence, threat monitoring and armed security around-the-clock. California officials have reportedly been coordinating backup protection — with the California Highway Patrol expected to step in to help protect Harris in Los Angeles — and state leaders have publicly condemned the move as politically motivated.
Democratic leaders and California politicians quickly criticized the decision. Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass framed the action as vindictive and said they would work to ensure Harris’s safety. Supporters called the move part of a broader pattern of reprisals against officials from the prior administration; critics of the revocation argue it risks politicizing the security of former national leaders.
The timing is notable: Harris is due to begin a multi-city book tour in September to promote her memoir, and the revocation removes a layer of federal protection during a period of heightened public visibility. Administratively, the change also follows several other protection/clearance alterations the Trump administration has made for figures associated with the Biden presidency.
