SAEDNEWS: Determining if a watermelon is ripe is one of the concerns of those buying this juicy and delicious fruit. In this article, we present methods for identifying a ripe watermelon.

How to Choose the Ripest and Juiciest Watermelon for Your Yalda Celebration

According to SAEDNEWS, Watermelon, due to its vitamins A and C and fiber, offers many health benefits. On average, watermelons ripen 80 days after planting. However, since growing watermelon is not an option for most of us in apartment living, it is important to know how to distinguish a ripe watermelon from an unripe one.

How to Identify a Ripe Watermelon

Ground Spot:

Pay attention to the yellow spot where the watermelon has been in contact with the ground. If the spot is dark yellow, it indicates the fruit is fully ripe.

Skin Color:

A ripe watermelon should have dark green and dull skin. Shiny skin suggests the watermelon is under-ripe.

Stem:

If the area where the stem connects to the watermelon is yellow, amber, or cream-colored, it indicates ripeness. If it’s still green, the watermelon is unripe.

Sound:

Tap the watermelon. A deep, hollow sound like a drum means it's ripe. A sharp sound suggests it's under-ripe, and a thudding sound indicates it’s overripe.

Weight:

A ripe watermelon is heavier due to its high water content. Pick up a few watermelons of similar size and choose the heaviest one.

Smell:

A ripe watermelon gives off a sweet fragrance that is noticeable even from the skin. If you don’t smell anything, try rotating the watermelon and sniffing a different part.
