SAEDNEWS: The Gaza Health Ministry reported on Wednesday that 6,000 individuals who suffered limb amputations amid Israel's genocidal war require immediate long-term rehabilitation, highlighting profound and enduring humanitarian impacts on numerous families.
In a statement marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the ministry described the situation of amputees in Gaza as “shocking,” highlighting that one in four are children who now face lifelong disabilities from an early age.
The ministry added that thousands of wounded civilians and their families continue to endure “deep humanitarian suffering,” stressing the urgent need for sustained physical rehabilitation as well as mental-health and community support.
It called on relevant international bodies to prioritize the needs of Gaza’s amputees and expand access to specialized treatment and long-term recovery programs.
In a separate development, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini noted in September that Gaza now has the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world, a grim outcome of the ongoing Israeli assault.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 70,000 people in Gaza, most of them women and children, and injured over 171,000 others. The offensive devastated the enclave before a truce agreement brought an end to the genocidal war on October 10.
