According to Saednews, Çırağan Palace (Çırağan Sarayı) is one of the most magnificent palaces associated with the Ottoman Empire. It was commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz in 1861. The palace was designed by the renowned Armenian-Ottoman architect Nigoğayos Balyan, while construction was completed between 1863 and 1867 by his sons, Sarkis and Hagop Balyan.
The palace is considered one of the final architectural symbols of the Ottoman sultans. It was customary for Ottoman rulers to commission their own palaces rather than continue living in residences built by their predecessors. Following this tradition, Sultan Abdülaziz ordered the construction of Çırağan Palace, without knowing that it would eventually become one of the last surviving palace monuments associated with the Ottoman dynasty.
Interior decoration and finishing work continued until 1872.
Sultan Abdülaziz never had the opportunity to enjoy the completed palace. He was removed from the throne before construction was fully finished and died shortly afterward, on May 30, 1876.
In 1910, Sultan Mehmed V permitted the palace to be used for meetings of the Ottoman Parliament. Only two months later, however, a major fire destroyed much of the building, leaving mainly its exterior walls standing. For many years afterward, the grounds were used as a stadium by Istanbul's Beşiktaş football club.
In 1989, a Japanese company purchased the ruined palace and undertook a major restoration project. The historic building was restored and incorporated into a luxury five-star hotel operated as part of the Kempinski hotel group.
Today, Çırağan Palace is one of Istanbul's most prestigious luxury hotels. The complex includes the restored historic palace, elegant restaurants, and facilities for events and gatherings. Located along the European shore of the Bosphorus, it sits between the districts of Beşiktaş and Ortaköy, offering spectacular views of the waterway.
One of the hotel's most celebrated accommodations is the Sultan Suite, which occupies a space associated with the former Ottoman royal residence. The suite combines historic character with lavish modern amenities and has been recognized among the world's most expensive hotel suites.
The palace's interiors feature fine woodwork, while many of the exterior surfaces are decorated with richly colored marble. A striking marble bridge connects Çırağan Palace with Yıldız Palace on the hill behind it, while the palace's substantial walls historically provided privacy and protection from the outside world.
