Even before entering, these artistic displays reveal much about the museum’s purpose and vision. Although the center was established relatively recently, it is dedicated to creative, modern, and contemporary art.
The Cafesjian Center for the Arts is an art museum located in Yerevan, Armenia, in the Kentron district. The center is dedicated to bringing the best of contemporary art to Armenia while introducing the richness of Armenian culture to the world.
Inspired by the vision of its founder, Gerard L. Cafesjian, the center presents a wide range of exhibitions, including important selections from the Gerard L. Cafesjian Collection of contemporary art.
Following its grand opening celebration in November 2009, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts has continued to showcase unique works of modern and contemporary art. The center also offers a diverse program of lectures, films, concerts, and educational activities for both adults and children.
Since its opening, the center has welcomed more than one million visitors annually.
Located on Tamanyan Street, the museum is part of Yerevan's famous Cascade complex. Its enormous stairway, decorated with fountains and water features, provides a pedestrian route and an impressive outdoor setting for modern sculptures. Built around Gerard L. Cafesjian's artistic vision, the museum presents a variety of contemporary artworks in both its indoor and outdoor spaces.
The foundation behind the Cafesjian Center for the Arts was established in April 2002 with the support of the Armenian government and the Cafesjian Museum Foundation in the United States. Construction of the museum began after its establishment and officially started in 2005. The project was initially expected to be completed in 2008.
However, the official opening ceremony took place on November 17, 2009. The event was attended by the President of Armenia, the Armenian Minister of Culture, diplomatic representatives, artists, and political figures.
More than $35 million was invested in the development of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. Its opening was considered an important milestone for Yerevan's cultural and artistic development and an important part of the city's modernization.
The Cafesjian Center for the Arts can generally be divided into two main sections.
The first is the outdoor sculpture area. From Tamanyan Street to the museum entrance, visitors can see a variety of modern sculptures created by internationally recognized artists. These works decorate the enormous Cascade stairway and create one of the most distinctive public art spaces in Yerevan.
The second section consists of the museum's indoor galleries, located beneath the outdoor stairways and fountains. These include Gallery One, the Khanjyan Gallery, the Eagle Gallery, the Sasuntsi Davit Garden Gallery, the Star Landing area, and spaces for special events.
The galleries feature an extensive collection of glass and contemporary artworks, displayed through permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Access to some areas, including Gallery One, the museum shop, the Khanjyan Gallery, the Sasuntsi Davit Gallery, and the Swarovski Crystal exhibition, is generally free of charge.
The Cafesjian Center for the Arts can also be rented for business meetings, conferences, lectures, banquets, and other special events. Its artistic atmosphere, panoramic views of Yerevan, central location, and position within the iconic Cascade complex make it a unique venue for a wide variety of occasions.
The outdoor garden and sculpture areas of the Cafesjian Center are generally open to visitors.
The Escalator Gallery is open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The exhibition galleries, museum shop, and visitor center are open Friday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The center is closed on official public holidays.
