Located in Khatu village in the Sikar district, at the foothills of the Aravalli Hills, the Khatu Shyam Temple is visited by thousands of pilgrims annually who seek peace, blessings, and spiritual fulfillment. The temple is dedicated to Barbarika (Shyam Baba), a revered figure believed to be an incarnation of Lord Krishna during the Kali Yuga. He is seen as a symbol of sacrifice, devotion, and protection of the weak.
The origin of Khatu Shyam Temple is rooted in the Mahabharata. Barbarika was the grandson of Bhima (one of the Pandavas) and the son of Ghatotkacha and Hidimba. He was born with extraordinary powers and possessed three divine arrows, earning him the title “Teen Baan Dhaari” (the wielder of three arrows). With these arrows, he could determine the outcome of any battle instantly—one to mark targets, one to destroy them, and one to restore them.
However, Barbarika had taken a vow to always support the weaker side in any war, which could have disrupted the balance of the Kurukshetra battle. Lord Krishna, aware of his immense power, appeared in disguise as a Brahmin and asked for Barbarika’s head as guru dakshina (offering to the teacher). Without hesitation, Barbarika sacrificed his head.
Impressed by his supreme devotion and sacrifice, Krishna blessed him that in the Kali Yuga he would be worshipped as Shyam Baba. It is believed that Barbarika’s severed head witnessed the entire Mahabharata war and was later established in Khatu, where it became an object of worship.
The modern temple was rediscovered in the 18th century when a sacred black stone idol was found and installed by local rulers. Since then, the temple has become a major spiritual center.
Khatu Shyam is revered as the deity of the Kali Yuga, believed to protect devotees and grant their wishes. Worshippers believe sincere prayers here remove obstacles, cleanse past karma, and bring prosperity, success, health, and emotional stability. It is also associated with mental peace, devotion, and inner strength.
Devotees chant “Jai Shree Shyam” and sing devotional bhajans, creating a powerful spiritual atmosphere.
The temple reflects traditional Rajasthani architecture, featuring carved stone structures, painted walls, and ornate gateways. The sanctum houses the idol of Shyam Baba, represented as a sacred black stone head adorned with crowns and ornaments.
The complex includes courtyards, domed structures, and the sacred water tank known as Shyam Kund, where pilgrims bathe before entering the temple to purify themselves spiritually.

Ekadashi: Observed twice a month with fasting and special prayers.
Before darshan, devotees take a holy bath in Shyam Kund. Offerings of flowers, sweets, and prayers are made inside the temple. The atmosphere is filled with devotion, chants, and spiritual energy.
