A Look at China’s Most Terrifying Road: A Route That Takes You to the Edge of Thrill and Fear — The Fine Line Between Life and Death + Video

According to Saednews tourism report, China is known for some of the most impressive infrastructure in the world—from suspended roads crossing rivers to highways built along narrow mountain ridges. However, when it comes to difficult and frightening roads, few can compare to the Lingpaishi Stone Road in Wuxi.

This narrow and extremely steep road is located in Wuxi County in southwestern China. With 18 sharp and exhausting bends, it is considered one of the most challenging routes any driver may encounter.

Where is Lingpaishi Road and why is it special?

Lingpaishi Road, also known as Wuxi’s Token Stone Road, is located between two large rock formations and connects the small Tianping area to the outside world.

The route stretches from Tianping Village to Provincial Road 201 and has a total length of 3.7 kilometers. However, the most famous section is the zigzag portion, which is only 453 meters long—yet challenging enough to test even experienced drivers.

18 sharp bends on a narrow and steep path

What makes this road famous and intimidating is the combination of its narrow width, continuous sharp turns, and steep gradient. Drivers must move at very low speeds and carefully navigate each bend.

Construction of the road began in 2012 and it was paved in 2019. In some sections, the slope reaches up to 36%, clearly showing why driving here is so difficult.

The road is so narrow that turning around is practically impossible, and even a small mistake can put drivers in a difficult situation.

Why is this road a driver’s nightmare?

Several factors make Lingpaishi’s winding road one of the most frightening in China:

  • Extremely narrow roadway requiring precise control

  • 18 consecutive sharp bends demanding full concentration

  • Steep 36% gradient making vehicle control difficult

  • No room for turning back in many sections

  • Driving requires extreme caution at all times

For this reason, the road is more of a real test of driving skill than an ordinary mountain route.

What vehicles are not allowed?

Lingpaishi Stone Road is not suitable for all vehicles. Trucks, buses, and vehicles with large trailers are prohibited because they cannot navigate the narrow and zigzag layout.

Even small cars must carefully use designated passing spaces at bends to continue safely along the route.

Recommended driving practice

Due to the steep incline, drivers are advised to travel through the zigzag section in first gear only. This helps maintain better control and reduces risks on tight corners.

A rare positive point: low traffic

Despite its danger, one advantage of this road is that it is usually quiet. The Tianping community has a very small population of only 137 people in 37 households. As a result, traffic on this connecting road is generally light.

This allows drivers to focus more on safely navigating the challenging bends without heavy traffic pressure.

Conclusion

Lingpaishi Stone Road in Wuxi is one of the most intimidating mountain roads in China. Although short, it features 18 sharp bends, a narrow structure, and a steep 36% gradient that challenges even experienced drivers.

While it serves as an essential connection for a small rural community, it remains a striking example of difficult mountain road engineering and extreme driving conditions.
