SAEDNEWS: Replacing the cooling pads of a water cooler due to wear and contamination is best done every few months. In the following guide, we will show you how to replace them step by step.
According to Saednews, One of the most important steps in servicing an evaporative cooler is replacing its cooling pads. It is recommended to replace the pads before starting the unit in the summer season. In the following section, we will teach you how to replace evaporative cooler pads.
To replace the pads of an evaporative cooler, first remove the unit’s covers. To remove the cooler vents, hold the lower handle of the vent and pull it upward so that the vent slides out like a cartridge.
Now place the vents on the ground in a way that the pads face you. At this stage, remove the springs or guards that are usually placed over the pads, depending on the type of cooler, often in a sliding or hook-like form.
Next, to remove any salt deposits from the vents, take a plastic pipe and gently tap the upright vent so that the deposits fall off.
You can then use a pointed tool to clean all the drainage holes in the vent, ensuring they are free from any blockage or buildup. After completing these steps, you may wash the vents with a small amount of detergent and water for better cleaning.
Now take the new pads out of their packaging and place them in a clean area. Since new pads are dry, they may have collected dust during transport, which could enter the home when the cooler is turned on. Therefore, it is better to wash the new pads at this stage as well.
Next, place the cleaned vents back on the ground and properly install the new pads. The pads should fully cover the entire surface of the vent without leaving any gaps. The new pads should also slightly cover the vent’s drainage section.
In the next step, reinstall the protective covers in order from top to bottom. To install the springs, first insert the edges that go into the holes, then fit the remaining parts into place.
Repeat these steps for all three vents of the evaporative cooler and slightly wet the new pads again. Now it is time to reinstall the vents back onto the unit, following the same method used when removing them.

After use, cooler pads become damp and moist, creating a suitable environment for the growth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Not replacing them can lead to the spread of these microorganisms into indoor air, potentially causing respiratory diseases and allergies.
Many health problems that occur during heavy use of evaporative coolers are related to not replacing the pads regularly. Some of the most common issues include:
The cost of replacing cooler pads is not very high, and it is recommended to do it annually to improve health and ensure the cooler works efficiently, providing clean air.
Another benefit is reducing dust circulation inside the home. Dust can cause various respiratory problems and allergies, especially for children and the elderly.
The third benefit is improved cooler performance and efficiency. Proper and timely replacement of pads also helps reduce energy consumption. In addition, new pads provide cooler and fresher air inside the home.
