Place the ruler along the sides of the cake at two or three points and mark the desired height with toothpicks (leave the toothpicks in the cake at this stage). Then, using a large serrated knife, cut around the cake along the marked points. Finally, slice through the center of the cake.
You can decorate the birthday cake with colorful candles. Use a large, sharp knife to cut the cake, and clean the knife after each slice to prevent the icing from sticking and ruining the appearance of the next cuts.
