SAEDNEWS: Contrary to popular belief, the inability to feel pain is not an advantage. Instead, doctors consider it one of the most dangerous genetic disorders because pain serves as the body’s first warning system against injuries and illnesses.
According to a medical report by SaedNews, many people believe that life would be easier if pain did not exist. However, medical research shows that pain plays a crucial role in protecting human health. Pain acts as an alarm system for the brain, signaling that a part of the body has been injured or is at risk. Without this warning signal, serious injuries may remain unnoticed for long periods.
One of the rarest known conditions related to pain perception is Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP), a group of genetic disorders in which individuals are unable to properly feel pain. In some forms, such as Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (CIPA), patients also lose the ability to sweat normally and cannot properly regulate body temperature. Recent studies suggest that this condition is not caused by a single genetic mutation alone. Several genes, including NTRK1, SCN9A, SCN11A, and PRDM12, may contribute to its development.
Doctors explain that children with this condition are especially vulnerable because they may suffer injuries during play or everyday activities without realizing it. Broken bones, burns, cuts, and other wounds can occur without the person feeling any pain. In some cases, patients may also experience injuries caused by biting their tongue, lips, or fingers because they cannot sense discomfort.
The absence of pain is not the only challenge faced by these individuals. In CIPA, problems with sweat gland function prevent the body from regulating temperature effectively. As a result, patients face a higher risk of dangerously elevated body temperatures and heatstroke, especially during infancy and childhood.

Internal injuries can also remain hidden for a long time. For example, bone fractures, joint damage, or certain abdominal conditions may go undetected until serious complications develop because the body’s most important warning signal — pain — is missing. For this reason, regular medical checkups and family education are essential parts of managing the disorder.
New research also shows that people with congenital insensitivity to pain do not all experience the same symptoms. While some patients may develop cognitive or behavioral difficulties, many others have normal intellectual abilities. The severity of symptoms depends on the specific genetic mutation and the subtype of the disorder.
Currently, there is no definitive cure for this condition. Treatment focuses mainly on preventing injuries, performing regular health evaluations, monitoring body temperature, and educating families about safety measures. Researchers are also exploring advanced approaches, including gene-based and cell-based therapies, although these treatments remain in the experimental stage.
Although pain is one of the most unpleasant human experiences, scientific evidence shows that it serves an irreplaceable protective function. A life without pain is not necessarily a safer or easier life. Instead, it can leave a person vulnerable to hidden dangers that pain normally helps detect and prevent before they become severe.
