According to the History and Culture Service of Saed News, Tabriz was one of Iran’s most important cities during the Qajar period and underwent significant transformations during this time. Due to its strategic location along the trade and communication routes connecting Iran with Western countries and Central Asia, Tabriz held special importance. During the Qajar era, the city emerged as a key commercial, cultural, and political center, playing a crucial role in Iran’s social and economic developments.

Tabriz witnessed several uprisings and rebellions in the Qajar period, reflecting the social and political unrest of the time. The city was particularly affected during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah, especially amid the Iran-Russia wars, in which Tabriz played a significant role. One of the most notable events was the Iran-Russia wars in the early 19th century, which resulted in humiliating treaties imposed on Iran and the loss of portions of its territory. Tabriz experienced major upheavals during these conflicts and was occupied by Russian forces multiple times.

Culture and Architecture

Culturally, Tabriz remained a center of learning and literature throughout the Qajar period. Many prominent poets, writers, and artists emerged from the city during this era. Architecture and the arts flourished, with iconic structures such as the Jameh Mosque of Tabriz and the Grand Bazaar of Tabriz—recognized today as historical and cultural landmarks—being constructed.

Social and Economic Life

Socially and economically, Tabriz experienced notable changes. The city’s bazaar, its commercial heart, thrived, and Tabrizi merchants conducted trade with various countries, including the Ottoman Empire and Russia. Overall, Tabriz in the Qajar era held a distinguished position both as a major center of commerce and culture and as a stage for significant political and social events.
