SAEDNEWS: Iran Seeks to Expand Cross-Border Electricity Links and Boost Regional Power Cooperation
According to Saednews, Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi announced the country’s plans to establish an electricity connection with Russia through a neighboring country during the 30th Belarusian Energy and Ecology Forum.
Aliabadi said Iran has already established electricity connections with its western neighbors, as well as Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east. Electricity links are also in place with Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and Iraq.
He stressed that regional energy cooperation is becoming increasingly important as electricity demand grows, particularly amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
The minister also emphasized the need to expand energy storage capacity and cross-border electricity interconnections to improve the balance between power generation, distribution and consumption.
According to Aliabadi, Iran’s electricity generation capacity has increased from 7,000 megawatts at the time of the 1979 Islamic Revolution to nearly 97,000 megawatts today.
He added that Iran manufactures power plant equipment domestically and exports it to countries across the region.
Aliabadi reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to developing its electricity industry, stating that the country is ready to cooperate with other nations and benefit from their capabilities despite sanctions and war.
