SAEDNEWS: Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Accuses French President of Double Standards on Nuclear Deterrence
According to Saednews, In a post on X on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei criticized French President Emmanuel Macron over what he described as a double standard on nuclear weapons, pointing to Macron’s remarks that freedom requires being feared and that being feared requires strength.
Baghaei noted that Macron had simultaneously insisted that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons, whether today, in five years, or in ten years, despite Iran never having sought to develop nuclear arms.
“The question is not why France possesses a nuclear deterrent force,” Baghaei said. “The real question is why a policy considered essential to France’s security and freedom suddenly becomes a ‘threat’ when applied to Iran, even when it concerns a peaceful civilian nuclear program under international monitoring.”
He argued that the underlying reality was that some powers did not seek peace on equal terms but instead aimed to maintain their monopoly on military power and the authority to intimidate others.
According to Baghaei, these countries seek to retain their own strength and nuclear arsenals while imposing restrictions on others, including nations pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, by invoking the specter of a supposed nuclear threat.
“Peace cannot be genuine when nuclear-armed states regard their own weapons as guarantees of freedom and security but portray the same principle as a threat when others invoke it,” he said, describing such an approach as a monopoly of power rooted in a sense of superiority.
Baghaei concluded that an international order that fails to recognize every nation’s right to security and peace ultimately serves the dominance of a small group of powerful states rather than safeguarding peace for all.
