SAEDNEWS: Iran is preparing to resume oil and gas exploration in the deep waters of the Caspian Sea after nearly a decade, as the semi-submersible drilling rig Iran Amir Kabir undergoes a major overhaul.
According to Saednews, Mohammad Hossein Daneshfar, CEO of the Caspian Oil Company, announced plans to expand exploration activities in Iran’s northern provinces, saying the Iran Amir Kabir semi-submersible rig is expected to resume exploration in the deep-water section of the Caspian Sea in 2027 after major repairs are completed.
He said a significant share of the geological structures identified through previous exploration activities in the Caspian Sea are located in deep-water areas.
Daneshfar added that the Iran Amir Kabir rig carried out drilling operations at the Sardar-e Jangal structure during the 2010s, confirming the presence of oil in the area.
On exploration activities in Gilan and Golestan provinces, he said exploratory drilling is currently underway off the coast of Gilan and in Block 18 of the Caspian Sea. The results will determine whether the structure under investigation is economically viable.
He also noted that seismic surveys have been conducted across parts of Golestan’s onshore, offshore and shallow-water areas. Based on the findings, drilling of one exploratory well is scheduled for next year.
