SAEDNEWs: Iran’s foreign minister, outlining the latest developments in the Oman talks concerning navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, said negotiations are ongoing and that, given the technical complexities involved, efforts are underway to establish a temporary route.
According to Saed News’ political desk, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said today (Saturday, August 8), on the sidelines of the president’s press conference with reporters, that the ongoing talks in Oman concern transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are currently negotiating, and given the technical complexities involved, we are working to establish temporary transit routes,” Araghchi said.
He added that the negotiations are approaching their final stages and that arrangements for temporary transit routes are being worked out based on specific maps designated by Iran’s armed forces. He expressed hope that the talks would reach a conclusion soon.
Araghchi stressed, however, that the discussions should not be interpreted as a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He said any reopening would depend on other conditions, including the United States making amends for its violation of the memorandum of understanding.
Referring to Article 5 of the memorandum, the foreign minister said the provision clearly states that Iran will take measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“We were pursuing this process when the Americans attempted to establish a new route,” he said. “They were repeatedly warned that this constituted a violation of the understanding, but the Americans insisted on opening these new routes.”
Araghchi emphasized that Iran would not tolerate violations of the memorandum or allow anyone to challenge Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.
