SAEDNEWS: Heavy rainfall has caused severe damage in the southern Indian state of Kerala, leaving eight people dead and eight others missing, according to officials on Sunday.
According to Saednews, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan confirmed that at least 78 people have died following devastating landslides in the state. In a statement shared on X, he said 13 others were injured, according to Anadolu Agency.
Authorities have relocated 5,792 residents to 209 relief camps as rescue and relief operations continue.
The chief minister assured that the government would provide assistance to families who lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. He also noted that while rainfall has eased, officials remain prepared to respond to any further emergencies.
India's annual monsoon season, which usually lasts from June through September, frequently brings heavy rainfall that can trigger floods, landslides, and widespread damage.
Meanwhile, in the northeastern state of Assam, officials reported that flooding has claimed at least 82 lives this season.
