SAEDNEWS: A miner has uncovered a 57,000-year-old wolf pup in Canada’s frozen mountains.
According to the social affairs section of Saed News, this remarkably preserved mummy was discovered by a gold miner in Canada’s Yukon region. Archaeologists report that parts of the wolf pup’s head, tail, furry paws, and teeth have survived exceptionally well over time.
Experts speculate that the pup likely died when its den collapsed on top of it while its mother was out hunting. Julie Maichen, an anatomy researcher at the University of Iowa, explained: “We can say the mummy is essentially intact, though it has lost its eyes. This preservation allows us to conduct a wide range of tests on the fossil.”
Analysis suggests the pup was not hungry at the time of death, having eaten a trout, and was around seven weeks old. Further studies revealed that the pup belonged to the ancient wolf lineages of Russia, Siberia, and Alaska.
“We hope that as the ice continues to melt, we will be able to uncover more mummies in this region,” Maichen added.
