SAEDNEWS: Mercedes-Benz G-Class: One of the Most Powerful SUVs Gets a Tougher, Reinforced G550 4×4 Edition

Full Review of the Mercedes G550 Professional: A Luxurious, Powerful Masterpiece That Will Amaze You!

According to a report from the Science and Technology desk of SaedNews, the boxy Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4 will hit the U.S. market in early 2017, starting at a base price of $225,000. At this price, it will become the most expensive G-Class model available, surpassing even the G65 AMG with its V12 engine, which is priced at $218,000.

The G550 4×4 was first unveiled as a concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The displayed vehicle was essentially a modified G63 6×6, with one axle removed and a body resembling a standard G-Class. The result was a G-Class with significantly increased ground clearance—43 centimeters to be exact.

This four-wheel-drive powerhouse features a heavy-duty transfer case, three differential locks, and portal axles—axles that are offset above the wheel center rather than aligned with it. These portal axles, which contain a single-speed gearbox inside, not only increase the vehicle’s height but also widen it. Compared to the standard G-Class, the G550 4×4 is 22 centimeters wider in the front and 25 centimeters wider in the rear.

The suspension system uses coil-over shocks with dual springs, ensuring maximum wheel contact even on the roughest terrain. Adjustable shock absorbers are paired with two stabilizers, providing smooth and controlled handling off-road.

Power comes from a 4.0-liter V8 engine—the same as the standard G550—producing 416 horsepower and 610 Nm of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission delivers power to all four wheels, with a 50:50 torque split between front and rear axles and a low-range gear for serious off-road capability.

While built for off-road adventure, the G550 4×4 does not skimp on luxury. Inside, it features the same premium amenities found in other G-Class models. For 2017, all G-Class vehicles will come with an upgraded Mercedes-Benz infotainment system, including an 8-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for seamless smartphone integration.
