SAEDNEWS: Oxidation and reduction (redox) reactions are chemical processes that can cause reversible color changes in solutions—a fascinating phenomenon that vividly illustrates the role of electrons in energy transfer.
According to the Science Service of Saed News, when at rest, the solution remains without fresh oxygen, and methylene blue is reduced to its colorless form, known as leuco–methylene blue.
However, when the bottle is shaken, the oxygen in the headspace dissolves into the solution, oxidizing the leuco–methylene blue. As a result, the compound returns to its characteristic blue color.
This process is a classic example of a reversible redox reaction, visually demonstrated by the striking color changes of the solution.
