Iran to Take Cautious Approach on New UN Secretary-General Selection

According to Saed News, Esmaeil Baghai, in today’s (Tuesday) session, responded to a reporter’s question regarding Rafael Grossi’s candidacy for UN Secretary-General by saying: “It is a bit early to talk about the UN Secretary-General because the current Secretary-General still has a significant remaining term.”

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson added: “The Secretary-General must be nominated by the Security Council and presented to the General Assembly with nine votes. As Iran, we have one vote in the General Assembly, and we will make timely evaluations regarding the various candidates who are expected to run for this important position.”

Baghai continued: “The position of Secretary-General is the most important in the administrative hierarchy of the UN and carries many responsibilities and authorities according to the UN Charter. Therefore, the Charter specifies certain criteria for a person to hold this position, the most important of which are competence, integrity, and independence from external pressures and parties outside the UN when handling various cases. These qualities and indicators will influence our decision-making on this matter.”
