SAEDNEWS: UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons and its nuclear program is peaceful, while the Iranian President called for stronger UN positions against Israeli crimes.
According to Saed News, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday, September 1, 2025 (10 Shahrivar 1404), during his visit to China.
Pezeshkian emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always sought peace and stability, and it was the Israeli regime that imposed war. He expressed appreciation for Guterres’ positions regarding Israel’s crimes against Palestinians in Gaza and attacks against Iran.
The Iranian President also requested that Guterres take a firmer stance in condemning Israel’s crimes against Palestinians and other countries in the region. He stressed that international organizations, especially the UN, must take serious and practical measures against Israeli provocations and aggression.
Pezeshkian noted that Iran was attacked by Israel while engaged in negotiations with the United States. He reminded that Iran has been one of the primary victims of terrorism since its establishment, with numerous officials and leaders killed in terrorist actions. Today, Israel allegedly targets anyone it chooses in the region under the pretext of self-defense.
He criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its Director-General, stating that Iran has been subject to the most stringent inspections, yet the agency has not condemned Israeli attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. According to Pezeshkian, this contradicts international norms. He added that Iran’s parliament passed a law suspending certain cooperation with the IAEA, leaving decisions about future collaboration to the Supreme National Security Council, as Iran seeks constructive diplomatic engagement.
In response, Guterres stated that he is personally convinced Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons and that its nuclear program is peaceful. He affirmed Iran’s right to maintain a peaceful nuclear program.
Guterres also expressed concern about the snapback mechanism not being activated and has requested European JCPOA partners to cooperate with Iran on this matter.
