SAEDNEWS: Russia has proposed a draft extension of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 on the Iran nuclear deal, aiming to provide space for diplomacy and peace.
Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, announced early Wednesday Russia’s proposal to extend the UN Security Council resolution on the Iran nuclear deal.
According to Saed News, Polyansky stated in a press conference following the Security Council meeting: “We are not talking about a six-month reduction of sanctions; rather, we are talking about the extension of Resolution 2231.”
Sputnik News reported that he explained: “In fact, Russia and China, as responsible participants in the JCPOA, want to provide more space for diplomacy and opportunities to find a diplomatic solution to this issue.”
The Russian diplomat further said: “We believe the choice of the international community should favor peace and diplomacy, not war, and this is what our draft resolution is about. The second version [of the draft resolution] is currently circulating among Security Council members. We hope it will be acceptable.”
According to a document obtained by Sputnik, Russia is proposing to extend the validity of Resolution 2231 for six months, until April 18, 2026.
Previously, Esmail Baghai, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Tehran is reviewing Russia’s proposed draft resolution.
