SAEDNEWS: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that European countries lack legal and moral authority to trigger the snapback mechanism, and Iranian diplomacy is actively working to prevent its implementation.
According to Saed News, citing Fars, Ismail Baghai, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, stated regarding diplomatic efforts to prevent the implementation of the snapback mechanism that Iran does not in any way intend to underestimate the importance of what is known as the UN Security Council sanctions reinstatement mechanism.
He emphasized awareness of the potential adverse consequences. When Iran says that European parties lack the legal and moral authority to invoke this mechanism, it not only refuses to acknowledge such a right but is also concerned about its ramifications. The Foreign Ministry’s position is to ensure that the issue does not escalate into psychological warfare against the public.
Baghai added that Iran has a clear program and has taken extensive measures to prevent the misuse of this mechanism. The ongoing discussions in Geneva, following phone calls between the Iranian Foreign Minister and European counterparts as well as talks with Ms. Callas, China, and Russia, are part of these efforts.
He noted that Iran has long included the principle that the European Troika has no legal or moral right to exploit the snapback mechanism in its agenda and is hopeful that these efforts will bear fruit. Regarding the draft resolution reportedly submitted by Russia to extend UNSC Resolution 2231, Baghai said that Iran is aware of it and is reviewing the document.
