SAEDNEWS: Political activist Mahmoud Sadeghi criticizes recent attacks on President Pezeshkian, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing legitimate criticism from defamation and the need for transparency in governance.
According to Saed News, political activist Mahmoud Sadeghi, in an interview with Etemad Online, commented on the recent wave of attacks by hardliners against President Pezeshkian and the hidden motives behind them, especially while the country continues to face multiple challenges and some still seek political retribution.
Sadeghi stated that the right to criticize is preserved for everyone. Criticism of officials is a part of the system, and expressing different viewpoints is free, whether by the general public, the media, or parliamentary representatives who have oversight duties. Criticism by others does not negate the parliament’s right to supervise executive officials, including the president.
He added that while the president, like other officials, may make mistakes, the line between criticism and defamation should remain clear. Recent remarks by some individuals about Pezeshkian have exceeded legitimate oversight and entered the realm of insult and sabotage, especially given the extraordinary conditions the country is facing and the inheritance of problems from the previous administration. He stressed that now is the time for cooperation to solve the country’s problems.
Sadeghi noted that some criticisms appear rooted in Pezeshkian’s open and candid stance on issues, particularly regarding negotiations and foreign policy. From the critics’ perspective, this openness is seen as weakness, prompting attacks. However, hiding or covering up problems does not resolve them; acknowledging issues is the first step toward solutions.
Regarding comparisons of Pezeshkian to former president Bani-Sadr or claims of political incompetence, Sadeghi dismissed these, stating critics are unaware of current realities and history. He argued that Pezeshkian is one of the most trusted presidents by the Supreme Leader, noting previous support expressed even before his inauguration.
Over the past year, Pezeshkian has focused on full coordination with the Supreme Leader, which has drawn some criticism regarding his independence. Sadeghi emphasized that critics must understand the significance of this alignment and refrain from attacks, recalling repeated warnings from the Supreme Leader on the proper expression of criticism and use of oversight powers.
Finally, Sadeghi said that historical comparisons are outdated and often driven by political revenge, with hardliners opposing Pezeshkian due to his moderate approach. He concluded that these factions may again face reprimands from the Supreme Leader in the future.
