Iran’s President: Fuel Subsidies Should Target the Needy, Not Heavy Consumers

According to Saed News citing ISNA, Masoud Pezeshkian, speaking today (Sunday, August 10) in a meeting with media executives, stated:

“I do not want to raise gasoline prices for the underprivileged. But why should we subsidize someone who consumes four times more fuel? This requires your help, solidarity, and unity. At present, $4 billion worth of gasoline is set to be imported. For what purpose? So that I can allow some people to consume it at the rate of 1,500 tomans per liter?”

He continued: “Currently, over 8,000 schools are under construction—despite the fact that we have no money. We are also changing teaching methods. My unannounced visits to ministries and government offices are not for show. I don’t bring the media with me; I go myself. I am not after publicity. I have gone to the Plan and Budget Organization several times to push for operational budgeting.”

The President stressed: “We will not do anything without the consent and coordination of the Supreme Leader, even if it goes against my own opinion. I believe in this—not as a slogan, but with my whole being.”

He added: “Once we have coordinated, it would be better if others stop objecting to why we took a certain action. We will not act without coordination. What serves the interests of the country and the people must be done.”
