SAEDNEWS: Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s bid for the Nobel Peace Prize has been abruptly withdrawn by a senior Ukrainian official, citing Trump’s failure to uphold peace commitments in the Ukraine war and his perceived appeasement of Vladimir Putin.
According to Saed News, Donald Trump’s fleeting aspiration to receive the Nobel Peace Prize has been quashed after Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Merezhko, head of Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Committee, officially rescinded his nomination. Merezhko had initially nominated Trump in late 2024, hoping to incentivize him to fulfill his pledge to end the Russia–Ukraine war.
However, following a series of failed negotiations and a public spat between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, trust eroded quickly. In his letter to the Nobel Committee, Merezhko wrote:
“Trump’s appeasement of Putin only emboldens further aggression. He’s chosen to turn a blind eye to it all. I’ve lost all belief in his promises.”
Despite setbacks in Ukraine diplomacy, Trump’s recent attempts to mediate a ceasefire between Iran and Israel following a 12-day conflict have revived some interest in his candidacy for the prize. On Tuesday, Buddy Carter, a Republican congressman, submitted a letter nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising his “extraordinary and historic role” in ending hostilities between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
Merezhko acknowledged Trump’s efforts in the Middle East, stating:
“I understand his position on Israel. I just wish he had the same stance on Ukraine.”
He added that Ukraine had complied with Trump’s various ceasefire-related demands, including contentious proposals to barter the country’s natural resources in exchange for U.S. mediation—yet peace remained elusive.
Trump’s fluctuating role on the global diplomatic stage, particularly in two of the world’s most volatile regions, has sparked sharp debate over his suitability for one of the world’s most prestigious accolades. For now, his Nobel ambitions remain—at best—in limbo.
