The British newspaper The Guardian reports: “The zoo’s famous gorilla has given birth to her second child after 20 years. Salome, the gorilla, has displayed behavior after giving birth that zoo staff and veterinarians describe as something only a professional caregiver could exhibit. The interactions between mother and child are behaviors previously observed only in humans.
After birth, the baby gorilla instinctively sought its mother’s breast, much like a human infant. However, this behavior was completely unusual for Salome. Now, it is up to Salome’s instincts to convey to this human-like child that it is, in fact, a gorilla. So far, she has been unable to form an emotional bond with this unusual offspring.
Dr. Brian Carroll, Deputy Director of the zoo, said: ‘The baby gorilla’s strange behavior is so unbelievable that one might even describe it as addiction. Addiction in an animal is incomprehensible, yet we must admit that this behavior is far from normal.’
Redrob, the zoo director, along with several officials and professors from the University of Bristol, is studying Salome’s behavior closely. In an interview with CNN, Redrob said: ‘Animal behavior is far too complex to fully understand in just a couple of months. Salome gave birth to her first child at age ten, but was unable to care for it, and the baby died. She now fears losing this baby as well and being left alone. Her behavior is therefore that of a devoted caregiver, trying to prevent the death of her offspring.’
The zoo has invited several renowned gorilla experts from around the world to analyze Salome’s behavior and uncover the secrets behind her and her baby’s actions. Salome refuses to be separated from her child even for a moment, making it impossible for staff to approach the baby gorilla.
