Delta State University confirmed the death of 21-year-old student Demartravion “Trey” Reed of Grenada. University police Chief Michael Peeler said Reed was discovered near the pickleball courts on the central campus at about 7 a.m. Monday.
President Daniel Ennis said the Delta State community is “heartbroken” by the loss and extended his thoughts to Reed’s family and friends during this difficult time.
The Bolivar County coroner’s office is handling the investigation. Medical examiners are working to determine the cause of death, and additional details will be released once authorities complete their inquiries, Peeler said.
In response to the tragedy, the university canceled all classes and activities on Monday, including events tied to its centennial celebration. President Ennis and campus leadership are consulting on whether classes will resume on Tuesday.
Counseling and other support services have been made available to students and staff. The campus chapel remains open for prayer, and a memorial prayer service is being organized to honor Reed’s memory. University officials have stated that campus safety has been confirmed by authorities.
