Armenian Lawmaker Opposes Any Geopolitical Changes in the Region

Ara Shaverdian, the Representative of Armenians of Tehran and northern Iran in the Parliament has expressed opposition against any geopolitical and border changes in the region.

Armenia’s border is historically significant for Iran and this connection must never be severed, Shaverdian told IRNA.

Iran-Armenia relations are rooted in deep historical and cultural ties, he stated.

He went on to say that trade between the two countries was targeted to increase from $1 billion to $3 billion during the previous Iranian administration, a goal that continues to be pursued.

The incumbent administration has prioritized strengthening ties with neighbors, particularly Armenia, focusing on enhancing economic and trade relations.

President Masoud Pezeshkian has actively participated in regional and international bodies, reflecting Iran’s strong diplomatic engagement.

Armenia has expressed interest in attracting Iranian businesses and investors, he said.

Despite Western sanctions, Iranian companies can actively participate in Armenia’s infrastructure projects, including the ongoing construction of a road from Nordooz border toward the north of Armenia, involving Iranian contractors and engineers.

Several agreements have already been signed between Iranian and Armenian private sectors in customs development, road construction, and school building.

Shaverdian emphasized the significance of the Iranian president’s upcoming visit to Armenia, expecting key economic and border agreements to be signed, with the aim of boosting bilateral trade to $3 billion.

Armenia, as a permanent member of the Eurasian Economic Union, and Iran, as an observer, have been holding discussions to enhance economic cooperation since last year.
