Russia: IAEA Board’s Anti-Iran Resolution Deals Serious Blow to Agency’s Credibility

Reacting to the IAEA Board of Governors’ vote on the draft resolution regarding the NPT Safeguards Agreement with Iran, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said there is no need for emergency measures by the Board concerning verification activities in the country.

Zakharova noted that the IAEA Secretariat had not sought any instructions from the Board of Governors. She emphasized that Russia recognizes Iran’s continued compliance with its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency, despite US and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards in June.

The spokesperson also highlighted that Iran maintained its commitments despite what she called unacceptable actions by Western countries in August and September, which aimed to unlawfully revive UN Security Council sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
