SAEDNEWS: Specialist at Razavi Hospital Reports Birth of a 7-Kilogram Baby to 37-Year-Old Mother

Rare and Extraordinary Birth in Iran: Mashhad Mother Delivers 7-Kilogram Baby

According to Saed News, citing Tasnim, due to the mother’s large abdomen and high weight, she underwent a cesarean section. Despite the procedure’s challenges, the surgery was successfully completed, and the mother’s condition was immediately stabilized. The newborn weighed 6.9 kilograms (about 15.2 pounds) at birth.

Dr. Ramazanpour explained that the mother’s previous children were born with normal weight through natural delivery, with her fourth child weighing 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds). In the last ultrasound before delivery, the fifth child’s weight had been estimated at around 4 kilograms, and the mother had experienced a normal pregnancy progression.

The obstetrics specialist at Razavi Hospital added that the mother has now been discharged in good general condition, while the newborn remains under observation in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit with stable vital signs.

Dr. Ramazanpour noted that the term “fetal macrosomia” is used to describe newborns with a large body size and birth weight over 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds). If the mother has diabetes and the fetus weighs 4 kilograms or more, or if the fetus weighs over 4.5 kilograms (9.9 pounds), a cesarean section is recommended.

Highlighting the rarity of such cases in Iran, he said the mother was transferred to the operating room at midnight. Without the swift actions of the hospital’s medical team—including obstetrics, anesthesiology, and surgical staff—both the mother and newborn could have been at serious risk during a natural delivery due to the baby’s large size.

The record for the heaviest baby in the world belongs to a Brazilian newborn weighing approximately 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds), who was born in 2005 and is recognized as the largest baby ever born in Brazil.
