SAEDNEWS: The latest package "seriously violates China's sovereignty and security interests, seriously damages China-US relations, and endangers peace and stability in the strait," Beijing's Foreign Ministry commented Saturday.
According to SAEDNEWS, On October 27, the situation in East Asia escalated as China condemned the United States’ recent decision to sell a $2 billion arms package to Taiwan. China's Foreign Ministry stated that this move "seriously violates China's sovereignty and security interests, seriously damages China-US relations, and endangers peace and stability in the strait."
In response to the arms sale, which includes important surface-to-air missile defense systems, China announced it would take “countermeasures” to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The government’s strong reaction underscores the sensitive nature of US-Taiwan relations, especially since Beijing sees Taiwan as a part of its territory.
Despite the tensions, the United States has a legal obligation to provide support to Taiwan, which does not have formal diplomatic ties with Washington. This obligation often leads to frustrations for China.
Taiwan expressed its gratitude to the US for the arms deal, with presidential spokesperson Karen Kuo stating, “Strengthening Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities is the foundation for maintaining regional stability.” This agreement not only reinforces Taiwan's defense but also highlights the ongoing complexities in US-China relations.
As both nations navigate this contentious issue, the future of peace and stability in the region remains uncertain.
