English translation: In the name of God: O Everlasting, O Constant, O Living, O Self‑Subsisting, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate; O Remover of sorrow, O Reliever of distress; O Sender of the messengers, O Keeper of the promise. O God, if I possess Your approval and love, then forgive me and those who follow me among my brothers and my Shi'a, and purify what is in my innermost self by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful. And may God send blessings upon our master Muhammad and all his Household.
One of the principal virtues of the Imam Husayn ḥirz is its power to remove the holder’s sorrow and grief and to bring about the opening of their affairs and relief from difficulties. In addition, if the holder uses the ḥirz with sincere belief in its power, God will bless that person’s progeny, making them pure and wholesome.
English translation: In the name of God, by God, unto God, in God’s cause and upon the faith of the Messenger of God: O God, protect me by Your power, Your might and Your ability from the evil of every assassin and the schemes of the wicked—indeed I love the righteous and those near to goodness. And blessings and peace be upon Muhammad the Prophet and his Household.
This prayer is attributed to Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) and is recommended to be recited after performing the five daily prayers to be delivered from problems and to open one’s affairs:
English translation: O God, I ask You by Your words and by the seats of Your Throne, by the inhabitants of Your heavens and Your earth and by Your prophets and messengers to answer me. My affair has worn me out, so I ask You to send blessings upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad and to make ease in my affair. Praise belongs to God, first and last.
Writing a ḥirz has particular conditions and etiquettes. To preserve respect and to ensure its effectiveness these conditions should be observed, among them:
The ḥirz must be written correctly and legibly.
The text should be written in proper Arabic.
The person must have sincere belief in the ḥirz’s efficacy.
Effort to avoid sin and to observe faith and piety are fundamental when writing and carrying the ḥirz.
Unfortunately, some ḥirz sold on the market are, in some cases, nothing but scribbles on paper instead of the correct Arabic text.
One etiquette of an effective ḥirz is that its words and letters must be written with the greatest care so that it produces the intended result and the rules of ḥirz‑writing are observed.
Writing the ḥirz on auspicious days and avoiding writing it during times such as 'qamar in ʿaqrab' (the moon in Scorpio—a traditionally inauspicious time in folk belief) is among the conditions to consider when writing a ḥirz.
The person writing it should be ritually pure and perform ablution (wudu) before raising their hands in prayer.
When writing the Imam Husayn ḥirz one should face the Qibla—that is, sit facing the Kaaba and write it in that direction.
It is not necessary to include all diacritical marks (harakat) when writing the ḥirz.
The Imam Husayn ḥirz must be written in full. Some ḥirz writers only write certain parts or words of the ḥirz, which is not correct.
The paper, pen and ink used to write the ḥirz should be produced by a Muslim.
