SAEDNEWS: On Thursday, China urged the United States to make significant reductions to its nuclear arsenal and to stop the spread of nuclear materials and technology.
According to SAEDNEWS, Beijing also called on Washington to “refrain from extending nuclear deterrence or expanding a nuclear alliance.”
Wu Qian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, expressed strong opposition to what he described as the U.S.'s “expansion” of its nuclear arsenal. He criticized the U.S. for avoiding its nuclear disarmament responsibilities by citing a supposed “China nuclear threat,” as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Wu emphasized that China follows a "self-defense nuclear strategy" and keeps its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level needed for national security.
“It is common knowledge that the US is in possession of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, and that it follows a nuclear policy that permits the first use of nuclear weapons,” he stated.
He also pointed out that the U.S. has recently invested significantly in the miniaturization of nuclear weapons for potential combat use. Wu claimed that this approach reflects a double standard on nuclear proliferation, which poses a serious threat to global strategic stability.
