SAEDNEWS: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out the UK rejoining the European Union during the current parliamentary term, according to an interview broadcast by British media on Monday.
According to Saednews, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said he hopes to see Britain rejoin the European Union during his lifetime, but stressed that he is not proposing rejoining the bloc during the current parliamentary term, Xinhua reported.
"We are way away from that at this particular moment in time," he said.
Burnham said the decade of experience since Brexit has not unfolded as people predicted at the time.
He argued that Brexit had weakened Britain's economy and its ability to control immigration, adding that the crisis involving migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats had emerged since the UK left the EU.
2026 marks ten years since the Brexit referendum, held in June 2016, when approximately 52 percent of voters supported leaving the European Union. Britain formally withdrew from the bloc in 2020.
The Labour Party won a majority of seats in the House of Commons in the 2024 general election. Unless an early election is called, the current Parliament is expected to serve a five-year term.
