SAEDNEWS: Indian Man Arrested for Marrying Two Sisters Simultaneously
According to Saed News, citing Young Journalists Club, a recent viral story is not a scene from a Bollywood film—it actually happened. A man from the Kolar region in the Indian state of Karnataka, who married two sisters at the same time, has been arrested by local authorities. The unusual wedding ceremony took place on May 7 at the Korudumala Temple.
Local media report that the groom, Omapati, initially proposed to one of the sisters, Lalitha, who was his relative. However, she set a condition for accepting the proposal: he must also marry her other sister, Supriya, who has a speech disability. After discussions between both families, it was decided that Omapati would marry both sisters, and the wedding was held with both at the same location.
However, after images of the ceremony were shared online, the police intervened and arrested Omapati because one of the women had not yet reached the legal age for marriage.
This is not the first time a case of an Indian man marrying two sisters has made headlines. In 2019, a similar case drew attention when a man in the Bhind region of Madhya Pradesh married two women who were cousins. In that ceremony, the 35-year-old groom first remarried his wife and also married her cousin during the same event.
It is worth noting that polygamy—having two wives or two husbands—is considered illegal under Hindu marriage law. A second marriage is not recognized as legal until the first spouse is legally divorced.
