According to the Technology Service of Saed News, quoting ISNA, OpenAI is preparing to launch a standalone social app that will support its video AI model, “Sora 2.”
According to Wired, reports indicate that this app, featuring a vertical video feed and swipe-based navigation, closely resembles the popular app TikTok. But here’s the twist: the app will only provide AI-generated content, and apparently, users won’t have an option to upload photos or videos from their phone cameras.
Wired adds that OpenAI will limit Sora 2 to producing clips of 10 seconds or less for use within the app. It’s unclear how restricted the model will be outside the app.
TikTok, following its initial 15-second limit, allows users to upload clips up to 10 minutes long. The new app is also said to include an identity verification tool.
If a user opts into this feature, Sora 2 can use their likeness in the videos it generates. This also means other people could tag those users and use their likeness when remixing one of their videos.
As a safety precaution, OpenAI will notify users whenever someone else uses their likeness, even in cases where a video is created but never posted to the app feed.
Additionally, due to copyright restrictions, the software will refrain from generating certain videos. However, it’s unclear how robust these protections will be, as the Wall Street Journal reports that OpenAI is asking copyright holders to prevent their content from appearing in videos produced by Sora 2.
Wired also comments on why OpenAI is releasing a social media app, stating that the company sees an opportunity to add a social component to Sora after repeated extensions by Trump to control TikTok’s operations in the U.S., hoping this will dissuade people from trying other models.
